Covid-beating antiviral spray

Burney-based Surface Finishing UK, Lancashire, has launched a ‘revolutionary’ antiviral coating that reportedly eliminates the spread of viruses including Covid-19, forever. Surface13 contains innovative technology that prohibits the virus from multiplying; it dies out with 94.25% effectiveness from 24 hours, the company claims.

Surface13 also has antimicrobial properties that allow the product to offer 99% effectiveness against bacteria, fungus and mould after 24 hours, according to the company. Tested to the international standards that measure antiviral and antimicrobial activity, Surface13 has passed ISO21702:2019 and ISO 22196:2011. The product has also been tested using SARS-COV-2 COV2019 ITALY/INMI1, the strain of Covid that produces Covid-19, rather than having been tested using a substitute strain.

“It’s important that antiviral products are tested to the specific virus,” said Tony Hudson, Surface Finishing UK’s managing director. “Viruses are all different, and product tests are only valid for the viruses they’re tested against. It’s easy to get confused, because some products have tested against feline coronavirus and it looks similar. That’s why we went for a human strain, we needed to know that Surface13 would stop the spread of the Covid-19.

“It’s indicated from government and the World Health Organisation that we will be living with this virus and its variants for many years. So, having something that offers a long-term, effective way to stop the spread in homes, workplaces and public buildings is vital.”

Surface13 can offer antiviral protection in three ways:

  • the product can be added into paint or surface finishes during the manufacturing process, giving antiviral benefits to any surface that product is applied to;
  • it can be applied on-site or in situ by an accredited Surface13 applicator; and
  • an aerosol DIY version can be be used at home.

“A simple practical use is for metal door handles,” added Tony. “Available in any colour, or clear, it also works on kitchen surfaces and doors in the home. One can give coverage of 2m², which would cover all the door handles in an average UK home. It costs £99, including VAT.”

Commercially, Surface13 can be used in hospitals and care homes, offices, shops and restaurants. In fact, it can be used anywhere that surfaces can be contaminated with the virus. For more information, visit www.surface13.co.uk.
