831 new glazing businesses opened last year, according to new analysis conducted by Yell. Using Companies House and Google search data, Yell’s study found that 13% more new businesses were founded in the UK in 2021 overall than in 2019 (pre-Covid). 831 of those were glazing businesses, and 2,505 were joinery installation specific businesses.
The data also showed that key areas to start window and glazing businesses include Oxford, Canterbury and Belfast. This part of the analysis was achieved by analysing Google search demand for the likes of ‘London window installation’ and comparing the results with the actual number of businesses offering that service in each area.
According to the research, 31,999 new businesses in the trades were founded in 2021, and the key areas to start a trades business include Belfast, Milton Keynes, and Salisbury. On average, 13% more new businesses were founded each month in 2021 than in 2019, with retail leading the way.
Claire Miles, Yell’s CEO, said: “With the challenges of the last two years, we might expect to find that fewer people were deciding to take the leap into the world of starting and running their own business. However, the data clearly shows that it has potentially inspired more people to take ownership of what they do for a living, and finally make the dream of running their own business come true.
“With the background of the pandemic and numerous economic and supply chain challenges, it’s really encouraging to see that the entrepreneurial spirit of the UK is continuing to grow year on year. We look forward to working with some of these new business owners in the trades sector in 2022, to help make their venture a success.”
According to the survey’s findings, the Welsh coastal town of Llandudno ranked as the most entrepreneurial location for new businesses, showing that big business doesn’t just start in cities. For further insights from this study, read the full report online, here.
