Cornwall Group set to win for supporting apprenticeship

Judges of the Cornwall Apprenticeship Awards have shortlisted the Cornwall Group eight times for the firm’s investment in young talent across the south west of the UK. The awards presentation ceremony, the eighth of its kind, is set to take place on Friday 9 February 2024, to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week.

Finalists from Cornwall Group include Maisie Simpson, who joined Cornwall Group last July as an apprentice in the marketing department. Maisie is in the running for the 2024 Achiever of the Year award, which recognises an apprentice that has overcome personal challenge or adversity yet has still completed their apprenticeship.

Maisie is largely responsible for Cornwall Group and its associated companies’ social media pages. This includes five LinkedIn Profiles, four Facebook pages, two Instagram pages and an X (Twitter) account. After proving her capabilities with social media very quickly, Maisie developed a TikTok presence for the business in February 2023, and successfully filmed and edited several videos for the social media platform based on the Cornwall Group Apprentice Journey.

When Maisie had to find her own place to live last October, rather than give up on her apprenticeship for full-time work, she was determined to complete her qualification. “Maisie has taken on her extremely unique role with great passion and dedication from the moment she walked into the office on her first day,” said Tom Julian, managing director of Cornwall Group. “We are so proud of the progress she has made within the last 15 months, and can’t wait to watch as her career develops further at Cornwall Group.”

Emma Harris, the company’s HR and marketing manager, was shortlisted for the Mentor of the Year award. “Emma understands and promotes the family culture that we work hard to maintain and enhance within our group, our colleagues and our ambassadors day in and day out,” said Mark Mitchell, Cornwall Group’s chair. “Emma is a shining example of what makes our business so strong and vibrant – a dedicated and ambitious individual who truly enriches our business.”

The other finalists are Ned Seaborne (accountancy); Ashley Triggs (construction and trade occupations); Josh Coopey and Brunel Bickerdike (digital and IT); Ruby Salmon (engineering and manufacturing) and Cornwall Group (Large Employee of the Year). About 20% of all Cornwall Group employees joined via the apprenticeship programme. 95% of those people have remained with the group for more than five years.
